Evan Kovanis

Evan Kovanis has applied his extensive experience as a software and hardware engineer to over a decade of intellectual property matters, serving as an expert witness and source code reviewer.

Evan Kovanis is a Computer Engineer with over 20 years experience implementing computer software and hardware. Evan has a degree in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he graduated with Honors. He has nearly a decade of industry experience designing and testing enterprise software, firmware, Application Specific Integrated Circuits, RF tuned telecom products, and custom printed circuit boards. Evan has experience in a number of industries, including fabless semiconductor, industrial switching, telecom, and desktop applications.

Evan has provided support in over 50 intellectual property matters. Evan’s IP experience ranges a wide variety of industries; from reviewing the hardware definition language (HDL) code that implements the world’s most capable Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to source code that manages many of the worlds largest vehicle fleets. Evan’s opinions and analysis has provided critical and impactful expert reports and testimony on source code implementing video games, GPUs, central processing units (CPUs), database management, internet traffic routing, peer to peer internet traffic, website and backend implementations, vehicle security and cryptography, vehicle asset management, vehicle RF, CPU power management, electronic design automatic (EDA), telecom networks, mobile device operating systems, supply chain management, software Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), financial software, computer memory controllers, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and many more. Evan also brings a background that includes serving on industry standard committees, providing a unique background to provide testimony and analysis on IP issues that involve industry standards like USB and HEVC.

Evan has applied his engineering background to a variety of matters that include software fault analysis, software clean-room design and implementation, serving as a court appointed technical special master, patent infringement analysis and charting, pre-litigation patent review, software copyright analysis, trade secret analysis, trade secret misappropriation, and others. Evan’s experience includes the background and skills to implement the powerful tools and skills required to analyze network traffic, search large code bases, analyze large databases, compare large and disparate sets of source code, and perform detailed and thorough analysis of source code functionality. This combination of experience across industries, experience with the latest software tools, and a deep understanding of today’s computing environments has enabled Evan and Kovanis IP to deliver results in situations involving analysis of binary code, embedded application firmware code, mobile application code running on Android/iOS, desktop application code, website and backend code, and HDL code.

While Evan often tackles projects alone, when the scope and workload of a project dictate, he has a network of trusted and seasoned colleagues that he has worked alongside. We look forward to working with each of our clients and exploring how our skills can best serve and fit their needs.
